SUPERVISION
The counselor-supervisor relationship should be solid. As a growing clinician out from under the protection of a university, your supervisor should give you a sense of confidence and growth. As a supervisor I focus on three things: clinical growth, personal introspection, and systemic and cultural advocacy.
What Does Supervision Look Like?

Me as a Supervisor:
-
Clinical Growth: From me, you will get honest and direct feedback. I do this in a way that doesn't criticize, but encourages you to think deeper and maybe think from a different lens. In order to grow, it's not just about the diagnosis or the content of the session, but environment factors, relationships, and cultural factors that contribute to the therapeutic process. We will look at these factors to consider best next steps, analysis, assessment needs, and diagnostic criteria.
-
Personal Introspection: While you are doing the hard work of supporting others, you are also living your life. That personal journey inevitably impacts our work as therapists. I like to communicate frequently and effectively with my clinicians to know what they need personally, help them find their boundaries and their pace, as well as help them tackle their biases and transference while progressing as a clinician. It's not easy, which is why good supervision means you get cared for too!
-
Systemic and Cultural Advocacy: I'm big on anti-racist and decolonized therapy. I challenge my clinicians to think about how the system impacts their clients. We also talk about the hard things marginalized folks face that you as the clinician may not identify with. How do you find the right resources? How do we bridge the gap? When do we listen to clients and validate and when do we offer to advocate? These are all things we should forever be learning, but there's no better time to start than in supervision.
So if you're an anti-racist therapist, committed to decolonization, cultural humility, advocacy, and learning, then I may be the supervisor for you! Let's grow and learn together as we serve in a time where people need so much care and healing.
