Assessments

We take a decolonized and culturally responsive approach to assessments. Instead of relying only on standardized tests, we center your lived experience, cultural identity, and personal story. Our process is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and affirming, helping you feel seen and understood as your whole self.

Decolonizing Assessments

Traditional assessments in therapy and mental health care have often been shaped by Western, Eurocentric models. While these tools can be helpful, they don’t always reflect the realities of people from diverse cultural, racial, and community backgrounds. Too often, this leads to experiences where difference is pathologized instead of honored.

At our practice, we use a decolonized, inclusive, and trauma-informed approach to assessments. This means:

  • Centering your story – Your lived experience, cultural background, and unique perspective matter as much as any standardized tool. We listen deeply and integrate your voice throughout the process.

  • Focusing on strengths and resilience – We highlight your coping skills, creativity, and community resources rather than reducing you to what’s “wrong” or missing.

  • Considering context – We recognize the impact of systemic issues such as racism, colonization, generational trauma, poverty, and discrimination. Assessments reflect these realities instead of placing blame on individuals.

  • Being culturally responsive – We adapt assessments so they honor your cultural and community context, rather than forcing your experience into narrow definitions.

  • Working collaboratively – Assessments are something we do with you, not to you. We explain results clearly, avoid clinical jargon, and invite your input every step of the way.

By decolonizing assessments, we create a process that is inclusive, affirming, strengths-based, and just. Our goal is for every person to feel seen, respected, and valued in their wholeness—not reduced to a score or label.
